Class Review: CycleSLAM at Cadence Studio Cycling + Fitness

We’ve made it far enough into these reviews that I FINALLY get to try NEW classes! Since I’ve already reviewed the classes that are in my normal routine. Not even a full month into the New Year. Like I said, I seriously needed to change up my routine!

I was ridiculously excited about finally trying a new class. So clearly this was one of my best ideas. ;)

The Scoop:

Cadence was the first fitness studio I went to because they were actually the first ones to approach me! They reached out over Instagram after they saw the “fitness class reviews coming in 2019” part in my bio. So I guess I should disclose that I did get a free week of classes from them. But only because they were gracious enough to reimburse me for their New Year’s deal that I signed up for - $14 for 7 days! Don’t worry - their generosity won’t affect my review.

Disclaimer: I try really hard to keep my own opinions out of these reviews because what works for me might not work for you. I’m just here to give you an un-biased look at what a class entails and you can decide if it works for you. I want you to get out and EXPLORE Lexington - by sweating in it. That being said, I will always let you know what I thought of a workout if you ask me directly.

A single drop-in class is $15. But there are also different packages listed on their website!

The Studio:

I didn’t realize this before I got there, but the studio is actually pretty close to where I live in Hamburg! It’s right next to the Panera that I frequent, so if I wasn’t cooking dinner that night it would have been the perfect for a healthy bite after my workout!

As for the inside of the studio, it has what you would want in any fitness studio. Lockers, showers, restrooms, and provided towels. One thing I really loved was that the lockers came with locks that you could use! At the YMCA, I always have to just put my stuff in a cubby since I never remember to bring my own personal lock. So I was really excited that Cadence helped me secure my things while I was in class! There was also a small area in the front for athletic clothing if you want a Cadence branded shirt or some nice pants.

There were two workout rooms in the studio. One is primarily used for the strength workouts, which I was in for the cycleSLAM class. Julie (my instructor and the owner of the studio) did show me the other room after class. That’s the one where they mainly teach barre classes and their new bounce class (on personal trampolines! Say what?!).

The Class:

The class is called cycleSLAM because almost all of Cadence’s classes are a unique fusion of two different class formats in one. So, if you couldn’t guess from the name, the class I took was a combination of a spin class and a strength-based circuit class that they call Slam. Here was the setup:

  • Warm up on the bike

  • Cycling - 9 minutes, focused on strength and power development (steep hill/heavy climb, sprint shift intervals in/out of saddle)

  • Slam #1

  • Cycling - 9 minutes, focused on speed and endurance (speed intervals, sprints, rolling hills)

  • Slam #2

  • Cool Down off the bike

And if you’re interested in seeing what the Slam circuits were, here they are. Slam #1 was:

  • Slams

  • Up + down on a step

  • Kettle-bell swings

  • Situp with ball catch

  • Battle ropes (making waves)

And Slam #2 was:

  • Ball toss

  • Plank walks on the step

  • Deadlift

  • Slams

  • Battle ropes (slams)

Y’all…I hate battle ropes. I’ve done them before, but I tend to avoid them at all costs if I can. But I am a firm believer that you should probably do more of the exercise that you hate - not less. So even though I groaned (internally) when I saw that battle ropes were a part of this class, I am glad that I had to do them.

The class size was something interesting to note. Since the two rooms in the studio are fairly small, they cab only fit so many pieces of equipment - which means only so many people for that equipment. There were only five of us in this class, but there were also only five bikes in the room. I didn’t count how many bikes were in the second room since I took such a quick glance at it, but it looked like there were only about five or a few more in there as well. Just something to think about if you have a preference for getting to know people in your class or fading into the background! I personally loved the small size.

The only weird thing for me was the bike. It had this dial on it that you either shifted to the middle or all the way to the right for immediate and quick resistance. This was usually something we used on hills. Since I had never seen that before, it took me a few tries to get used to adding the dial on in addition to peddling. But once I got it, I actually really liked it! Since there wasn’t a way to see the level of resistance on these bikes (some bikes in other studios do have that capability) it was nice to have a simple way of adding the needed resistance to the bike.

The music during the class was pretty good. I only recognized some songs enough to remember them - like Lady Gaga and DJ Khaled, for example. But I’m the sort of person who tends to forget music during a workout unless I have some sort of emotional reaction to it. Thankfully, the music I remember were songs I really like. :-P

Best for:

People who want to get in cardio and strength in the same workout.

Skip it if:

The treadmill is your best friend. ;)
